Graduating with honors in 2008, Earl jumped right into the field of Nutrition and Dietetics by becoming the only clinical dietitian at San Dimas Community Hospital. A year later, he started private practice consultations for La Verne Medical Group, gaining experience with clients needing diabetes education and weight loss. In June of 2010, Earl began working at Kaiser Riverside on a Step Down unit and telemetry floor. Being the dietitian on the Diabetes team, he helped the hospital achieve the “Advanced Certification in Inpatient Diabetes.”
In March of 2011, Earl transferred to Kaiser Ontario where he is now the dietitian in charge of the Intensive Care Unit and Step Down Units. He teaches dietetic students from Loma Linda University as they are in supervised practice in the critical care setting. Students frequently state how impressed they are with Earl’s knowledge and ability to teach. He has consistently exhibited enthusiasm for supervising students who have a desire to learn.
Why or how did you decide to go into your profession?
I started to get into working out at the gym during high school and realized how much eating the correct foods played a part in achieving your gym goals. I also wanted to do something in the medical field where I could help others with my passion without spending too much time in school. Next thing I know, my friend was an RD and told me what he did. From that point on, I was set on this career!
What do you love most about your career?
People know you as being the go to man in regards to anything nutrition related.
Describe a typical work day:
Work starts of in my cubicle screening patients to see on my assigned units. I then attend morning rounds in the ICU with the interdisciplinary team (MD, RT, RN(s), LCSW, and Chaplain. After rounds, I follow up with all the needed patients doing diet education, calculating tube feedings, reviewing parental nutrition formulas, and addressing any wound/malnutrition issues. How would you say your choice to attend Loma Linda University (LLU) shaped your professional career and/or your personal life?
LLU opened my eyes to many of the various avenues one can go down in the health field. It expanded the meaning of total health, incorporating a spiritual and personal side to things not just the absence of disease. Most importantly LLU taught me about how compassion can make a huge difference in patient care. As far as personal life, LLU is where I met my loving wife!

Participating in Lunch Powers where we made food for the entire School of Allied Health.

What advice do you have for prospective students interested in your profession?
Find a program that has an internship already built into it or has a guaranteed internship at the end. It will save you time and money in the long run!
