Admission requirements
The doctoral programs in marital and family therapy are advanced study over and above a standard master's degree curriculum in the field. Student transcripts will be evaluated on a course-by-course basis for the following areas of prerequisite study. Plans of study incorporating these standard master's level courses are available for students who have not completed these prerequisites.

Supervised clinical experience
Doctoral students must document a minimum of 1000 hours client contact in family systems/relational therapy under the supervision of an AAMFT Approved Supervisor (or equivalent). These hours may be obtained prior to or during doctoral study, however all doctoral students will be expected to participate in the doctoral level practicum sequence and be involved in clinical practice during their program of study. Students with less than 200 hours approved client contact will begin in the master's level practicum.

Financial assistance
Students who are accepted into the marital & family therapy program may receive financial assistance through merit-based awards such as teaching fellowships and a variety of research and student-serve assistantships, or through need-based financial aid such as a loan or the University's work study program.
Students interested in receiving financial assistance of any kind should indicate their interest on their application and during their admission interview.

This plan is for persons who do not hold the standard master's degree in Marriage and Family Therapy prior to acceptance. Well-qualified post-bachelor's students and persons with master's degrees in other fields are likely candidates for this option. Under this plan students are awarded a master's degree while in progress toward either the PhD of DMFT. This plan saves approximately a year's study and facilitates timely licensure as a Marital and Family Therapist. Students accepted into this plan will be officially enrolled into the master's degree program until the master's requirements have been met and they have been evaluated for their appropriateness for continued doctoral study. Doctoral internship
The doctoral internship affords the opportunity for full time advanced marital and family therapy work under the supervision of a senior marriage and family therapy professional. Internships will be designed meet the specific professional objectives of each student and may involve clinical practice, supervision, teaching, and/or research. Internships need not be in the Loma Linda area. Internships in other countries are possible. In some cases internships may grow out of a student's current place of employment, however, how the internship requirements and the student's developmental goals are being met must be clearly demonstrated.
