CalSWEC Supported Education Symposium - June 19, 2009
Supporting Individuals with Life Experience with Mental Health Issues to Succeed in Post-Secondary Education
The Statewide Supported Education Symposium was sponsored by the CalSWEC Mental Health Initiative, with funding support form the Zellerbach Family Foundation in June 2009.
Featured speakers included Daniel Chandler, PhD, a consultant with CIMH and expert in issues around supported education, Laurel Mildred, MSW, Former Executive Director of the California Network of Mental Health Clients, Tim Stringari, MFT and Rick DeGette, MFT, consultants with California Department of Mental Health/Department of Rehabilitation Cooperative, and Dina Redman, PhD, from San Francisco State University.
Presenters provided multiple perspectives around supported education, shared evidence based practices and research on the topic area, and presented specific action steps to develop support services for students with lived mental health experience. Small discussion workgroups identified ongoing issues and challenges, and recommendations for future training seminars and the development of an action plan.
