CAPS also acts as a resource for local residents and organizations seeking information about health services or networking opportunities to strengthen their community.  In order to develop and maintain partnerships, the CAPS office focuses on community-engaged scholarship by supporting and encouraging students and faculty to participate in all types of service-learning and volunteer opportunities, research and advocacy.

Community-engaged scholarship partners the school community with the local community through a collaborative approach to teaching and learning methods that equitably involves all partners in addressing and solving challenges that the local community faces.

Service-learning is a structured learning experience in which students provide community service in response to community-identified concerns and observe the connection between their service and academic coursework while partnering with the community to participate both as “learner” and “teacher.”
