Why MITHS?
MITHS is a challenging three-week summer program designed to introduce Black Seventh-day Adventist high school students to careers in the health sciences. The students selected for the program will spend three weeks at Loma Linda University totally immersed in campus life.
As a student in the program, you will have the first-hand opportunity to experience what happens on a health sciences university campus--basic sciences (anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pathology, pharmacology), clinical courses (nursing, medicine, medical technology, dentistry, dental hygiene, physical therapy, public health), and research. You will also develop time management and study skills in a workshop program specifically designed for you. The MITHS experience will prepare you for your senior year and show you what to expect in college.
In addition, there will be opportunity to make new friends, meet with Loma Linda faculty and alumni, and participate in social and spiritual events. The entire experience will be enriched by the wonderful surroundings of the Southern California environment.
Loma Linda University is the only complete health sciences institution within the Seventh-day Adventist Church, and is renowned for its contributions to health-care practice and education worldwide. The need for talented and dedicated Black Christian health-care practitioners and educators is great. Through MITHS, you will begin the process of preparation that will equip you to embark on such a career.
How much does it cost?
The great news is that the MITHS program is FREE to the participants. If you are selected, your room, board, and educational expenses will be covered by the Black Alumni of Loma Linda University, the Loma Linda University School of Medicine, and the Loma Linda University School of Dentistry. Your transportation to and from Loma Linda University will be your responsibility and your only major expense. You should have medical insurance coverage from an individual or group plan in your or your parent's name.
Who can apply?
MITHS participants will be selected from a pool of Black applicants who meet the following criteria:
- Junior in high school
- High academic standing - overall GPA of 3.5+
- High academic performance in science and math courses
- Seventh-day Adventist Church membership or affiliation
- Citizenship record in good and regular standing
- Participation in leadership, school activities, and community service
- Strong interest in a career in the health sciences
Who will do the instruction?
The MITHS courses will be taught by faculty from the School of Medicine and School of Dentistry who teach the regular medical school courses to LLU students. The MITHS research program will be led by research scientists employed in the health science programs of the various professional schools of Loma Linda University.
How do I apply?
The following is the process and timetable for application to the MITHS program:
Process: Submission of a completed application with all required attachments no later than the date outlined below.
Timetable:
- December of junior year in high school, you should have taken your PSAT, SAT, or ACT exam.
- February of junior year, you are to submit the application with all required documentation by the deadline date listed on the application.
- March – Applicants will be notified by e-mail to confirm their application was received.
- April-May – Either the last week of April or first week of May, the MITHS Selection Committee will review applications and select participants.
- May – Students will be informed on the second week of May, if they where selected, on the wait-list, or disqualified by e-mail. Further communication occurs between the MITHS Assistant and the participants by e-mail.
- June – July – The MITHS program begins on the LLU campus. After three-weeks the participants end the program and go home.
