(Students Teaching AIDS to Students)

The population in San Bernardino county is considered high-risk for AIDS and STDs. Our goal at STATS is to educate high school students about how their choices put them at risk. You and a partner of the opposite sex can sign up to go to local high schools and give a presentation about AIDS and STDs. A short Powerpoint presentation gives information about diseases as well as safe sex techniques, including abstinence. You and your partner demonstrate healthy interaction between men and women.

Most importantly, there is time for the students to practice their responses in situations where their beliefs are challenged. We provide the curriculum and handouts; you just talk to the teens! As students, we have a unique opportunity to present this information because we're close to their age group. We can be the big brother or sister that looks out for them. We can make a huge difference in their lives!

How you can get involved

As a student you can volunteer for a time slot, usually a class period, to give a STATS presentation. You are not obligated to do more than one, although you can if you want to! This year we provided the AIDS education for the whole junior class at a local high school and we have more to come! We need volunteers!

As a faculty or staff member you can be on the lookout for more places we can present. We believe our message is unique: health students not only teaching health principles but providing the opportunity to practice the skill of saying no. Please let us know of anyone you think would benefit from this instruction.
