SYNOPSIS

There is an increased awareness of the importance of providing analgesia, anxiolysis, and oral sedation in the dental offices. In recognition of this need, oral sedation became an important tool for pediatric dentists to help facilitate providing dental care for apprehensive children. Both the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) have published a series of guidelines for the monitoring and management of pediatric patients during and after sedation to help provide safe and efficient sedation for children.  This sedation course is intended for pediatric dentists and general dentists who have had training in sedation during their graduate or residency training programs and intend to renew their sedation permits. The course will review sedation techniques, patient selection, pharmacology of commonly used sedatives, management of sedation emergencies, and other related topics.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

Upon completion of the course, participants should be able to: Discuss the basic principles and guidelines of oral sedation Review the basic concepts of pediatric physiology and anatomy of the cardiovascular, respiratory and gastrointestinal systems Describe the differences between the pediatric airway and adult airway Discuss physical and behavioral assessment and their impact on patient selection Understand the pharmacological action and physiological effect of the commonly used oral sedatives Discuss monitoring, depth of sedation assessment and discharge criteria Discuss the risks and benefits of sedation and other alternatives Choose the appropriate sedatives for patients according to their behavioral and dental needs Identify, prevent, and manage sedation complications and emergencies
