SYNOPSIS

This program has been designed to cater to the entire dental team, including specialists, general dentists, auxiliary, and front office staff. This is an all-day program, with the option for the half-day attendance for those wishing to attend other activities.

This year marks the 50th session of the Alumni Student Convention. To celebrate, Loma Linda University has teamed up with The Dentists Insurance Company to give you an excellent program on a topic everyone needs – how to avoid litigious situations. This course also qualifies for a two-year 5% discount on TDIC Professional 5% Business Liability policy (see blurb at the end of this write-up for details).

So come join us, and earn continuing education units while learning how to avoid litigious situations with patients and staff.

TDIC claims experience shows that the way a doctor handles interactions with patients and staff directly affects the outcome of claims. Miscommunication, unexpected outcomes and lack of information can lead to serious consequences. Using actual claims as examples, Framework for Positive and Effective Interactions will give attendees practical methods for improving their interactions and enabling them to avoid or mitigate potential claims.

Cases include poor communication between a general dentist, an orthodontist, and an oral and maxillofacial surgeon lead to untoward results, a general dentist allowing an RDA to practice hygiene and dentistry, a pregnant hygienist filing wrongful termination, and disregarding patient complaints and not taking steps to remedy untoward results.

Audience participation includes a game show style interaction. Dentists, hygienists, assistants, and office staff are urged to attend this lively course!

OBJECTIVES

After completing this course, you will be able to:

  • Establish and implement an office pregnancy policy to avoid discrimination and wrongful termination allegations.
  • Incorporate corrective action practices to improve employee performance.
  • Institute protocols when treating patients with language barriers to secure their understanding of treatment.
  • Understand the importance of ensuring staff practice within the scope of their license.
  • Communicate untoward results without admitting liability.
  • Comprehend vicarious liability and the importance of proper referrals and patient follow-up.

This course qualifies for a two-year, 5 % discount on TDIC Professional & Business Liability policy effective on the next policy renewal along with continuing education units.  Please call TDIC at 800.733.0634 with questions regarding the risk management discount.
