SYNOPSIS

In honor of the 25-year anniversary of the Dental Anesthesia Program at Loma Linda University, School of Dentistry, we have planned a course specifically for the general dentist and specialist, that will present a wide range of topics related to the management of patients in the outpatient setting for sedation and general anesthesia with endocrine and systemic inflammatory diseases.

Updates on current medical management strategies will be discussed as well as preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative considerations for these patients. Clinical case reports will be presented to enhance the participants learning experience as well as a review of the pharmacology of medications used to manage these medical conditions.

Presentations

Endocrine Disorders commonly encountered in the Dental Office
This presentation will review and update of the etiology, diagnosis, treatment, prognosis, and prevention of endocrine diseases. Special attention will be focused on diabetes and its longterm impact on the various organ systems and the clinical implications of this effect. Thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal and pituitary gland disorders will also be discussed.

Systemic Inflammatory Disorders Commonly Encountered in the Dental Office
This lecture will review and update of the etiology, diagnosis, treatment, prognosis, and prevention of systemic inflammatory diseases encountered in the dental office. Special attention will be focused on RA and SLE and its long-term impact on the various organ systems and the clinical implications of this effect. Scleroderma, osteoarthritis and ankylosing spondylitis will also be discussed.

Clinical Pharmacology
This presentation will focus on the pharmacology and drug interactions for patients taking medications for diabetes, endocrine and systemic inflammatory diseases.

Preoperative and intraoperative management of patient with Type 1 Diabetes
Management of the patient with diabetes on the ward
