Three LLUSD graduate students from the Advanced Education Program in Periodontics were awarded first place in three different research categories at the annual Research Awards Competition sponsored by the California Society of Periodontists.
Chun-Xiao Sun, DMD, PhD, MS, won first place in the category for Basic Research. The title of his presentation was “The Expression Changes of Inflammatory Mediators, Adenosine Receptors, in Chronic Human Periodontitis: A Preliminary Study.” Dr. Sun will be awarded an MSD degree based on this research when he graduates June 2009.
Each of the winners was honored with an award of $1000 from the California Society of Periodontists at the annual meeting held in the Marriott Napa Resort May 7-8, 2009.
In addition, Erik Sahl, SD '06, assistant professor, Restorative Dentistry, resident, Advanced Dental Education in Periodontics, received $250 for placing second in California’s Outstanding Periodontal Resident—The Robert L. Merin Student Leadership Award 2009.
“I believe that this is the first time that Loma Linda School of Dentistry graduate students captured first place in all of the categories that they entered at the CSP meeting,” said Jeffrey Henkin, DDS, MS, director, Advanced Education in Periodontics Program.
