Overview of the training program
The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery offers a six-year program designed to meet the requirements of the Commission on Dental Accreditation of the American Dental Association for an approved advanced educational program in oral and maxillofacial surgery. The six-year program provides a medical degree (MD) at the completion of the training. Qualification for the program requires applicants to be graduates of a recognized dental school in the United States. Applicants must have a 90 percent or better average on part I of the dental national boards.
Applicants accepted into the six-year combined OMS/MD track are granted advanced standing at Loma Linda University School of Medicine. The candidate must take the current licensing examination prior to graduation from medical school. At the conclusion of medical school, there is a one-year postgraduate internship in general surgery that fulfills the licensure requirements in those states requiring one postgraduate year of medical residency. The remainder of the program will fulfill the requirements for advanced education in oral and maxillofacial surgery as required by the American Dental Association, which includes a minimum of 30 months of oral and maxillofacial surgery experience.
The program utilizes the clinical facilities of Loma Linda University School of Dentistry, Loma Linda University Medical Center, Riverside County Regional Medical Center, and Arrowhead Regional Medical Center. The program includes extensive training in maxillofacial trauma, facial reconstruction, maxillofacial pathology, orthognathic surgery, aesthetic surgery, temporomandibular surgery, craniofacial surgery, and dentoalveolar surgery.
Rotations on general surgery, anesthesia, otolaryngology, plastic and reconstructive surgery, medicine, and ICU provide the resident with an extensive background in management of a variety of medical/surgical problems. Residents attend weekly seminars that provide a thorough background in biomedical science, research, diagnosis and treatment planning, and other aspects of the specialty.
