a. Residents will be able to diagnose and treatment plan pediatric dental patients assigned to them.
b. Residents will become proficient in the comprehensive treatment of a wide variety of pediatric dental patients.
c. Residents will experience “service” within the context of delivering pediatric dental care to their patients and participation in service learning experiences.
a. The program curriculum will be compared to the “Standards” for advanced education in pediatric dentistry as set forth by the Commission on Dental Accreditation.
a. Residents will receive information in the area of practice management that will attempt to prepare them for a variety of private, military or public health practice opportunities or a career in academics.b. Goal #1 and #2 will prepare the residents for clinical activities in the practice of pediatric dentistry.i. Goal #1. To prepare the resident to be a specialist who is proficient in providing comprehensive preventive and therapeutic oral health care for infants and children through adolescence, including those with special health care needs.ii. Goal #2. To provide an educational structure that complies with the standards set forth by the Commission on Dental Accreditation.
a. The resident will develop a research protocol.b. The resident will conduct a research project that is completed in a publishable or scientific format.
a. Residents will participate in the undergraduate teaching program of pediatric dentistry both clinically and in a laboratory setting.b. Second year residents will serve as mentors of first year residents.
a. Review the reading list of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry.b. Review and discuss the rational for answers on Mock Written Tests for the ABPD Board Certification Process.c. Review literature and present the information from articles from recently published journals from the ADA, AAPD, AAP, CSPD, CDA & other recognized journals from the AMA and organized dentistry.d. Review the AAPD Reference manual, discuss how the guidelines affect the practice of pediatric dentistry & know the evidence base to deviate form the guidelines when indicated.e. Present clinical cases detailing the treatment provided and alternatives with reference to the current AAPD Guidelines, other guidelines within organized dentistry and provide the evidence base which guided their treatment course.f. Participate in several mock oral boards to prepare the residents for the Oral Board portion of the ABPD Board Certification Examination.g. Encourage residents to participate and complete certification by the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry as soon as possible
The residency program uses a wide variety of facilities to get hands on training. In addition to utilizing the facilities the residents are able to see a diversity of children. The patients include but are not limited to children with psychologically compromised, hematologic/ oncologic diseases, disabilities, and craniofacial anomalies.
