Local Domestic Opportunities
Besides the domestic service learning, which is incorporated into the curriculum at LLUSD, students are encouraged to become involved locally outside of the school to reach their expected goals of 120 service learning hours (DDS) and 75 hours (DH). Below are just some opportunities that students may avail themselves to. Of the specified service learning expectations, up to 30 hours can be in non-dental service.
DENTAL
• Compassion Clinic
Locally based clinic that provides dental service to the homeless in Riverside, CA and San Bernardino, CA.
• SOS (Share Our Selves)
Clinic located in Costa Mesa, CA serving the underserved of that community one Sunday each month.
• Local Health Fairs
Sponsored throughout the academic year by local churches, communities, and health agencies.
NON-DENTAL
• Local Church Leadership
Students may serve in their local churches by teaching, giving Bible studies, providing special music, holding an office, etc.
• Civic Participation
Students may observe city council meetings, attend hearings on health related issues, etc.
• Local Schools
There are a number of schools in the area where students may volunteer time to tutor or mentor elementary, middle, and high school aged youth.
