PHILOSOPHY OF SCIENCE AND ORIGINS
BIOL 475; 4 quarter units
September 22 to December 11, 2008
Instructor: Leonard Brand, PhD
Professor of Biology and Paleontology
This is an online course that explores the philosophy of science, the relationship between faith and science, and the complex issues of evolution and creation and earth history from a Christian Biblical perspective. This is a valuable college-level course available as a supplement to courses already being taught at other colleges and universities or as an independent accredited course.
Topics covered: The process of scientific investigation and the limits of science, aspects of the history of science, faith and science, the origin of life, microevolution and speciation, the theory of large-scale evolution--two interpretations of the evidence, sociobiology, a creationist theory of the process of biological change, introduction to geology, geological time, catastrophism in modern geology, and the theological implications of life's origin by evolution (why it matters what we believe).
Text: Faith, Reason and Earth History, 2nd ed. by Leonard Brand, from Andrews University Press.
Tuition: US $520/quarter unit. Students outside of North America may apply for a partial scholarship to assist with the tuition cost (application form below). To: SDA higher education leadership and prospective students worldwide
From: Dr. Lyn Behrens
I am writing in support of the web-based course Philosophy of Science and Origins, being taught by Dr. Leonard Brand. This is a course that he has taught at Loma Linda University for over 25 years. The course has been a help to our students in understanding the difficult issues in the controversy over evolution and creation in a way that encourages their faith in the Creator and His Scriptures while also helping them to understand and appreciate the positive contributions of science. If this course can be a helpful supplement to your own course offerings, we will be pleased to be of service to your students.
Blessings to you,
B. Lyn Behrens
President, Loma Linda University
