BACKGROUND OF THE IMPLANT STUDY GROUP
In the early 1970s Dr. Robert James initiated an informal one-on-one implant dentistry teaching and mentoring practice. Dr. James invited these dentists to participate in treatment planning sessions, observe surgeries, and present case studies. Through word-of-mouth this group grew to several dentists, and Dr. James created a study group, which met eight times per year. The patients came from Dr. James' private practice, with the clinical schedule and finances managed by his personal staff.

COURSE DESCRIPTION
For the last 32 years, the Loma Linda University Implant Dentistry Study Club has provided part-time didactic and clinical training in implant dentistry to general practitioners and specialists alike. One of the first study clubs in the country, it gives the opportunity to the participant to perform dental implant clinical procedures under supervision. The study club is now joining forces with the American Academy of Implant Dentistry and together instituting the first MaxiCourse® in the west coast that not only will provide didactic training but also real hands-on instruction during clinical placement of dental implants. This program, unique for that aspect, will bring renowned presenters from the Loma Linda University Implant Dentistry Program and from around the world.

The course offers over 300 hours of lectures, laboratory sessions, live surgical demonstrations, and clinical experiences placing dental implants on real patients. By combining the study club with the MaxiCourse®, the student will be well prepared to take the written portion of the AAID Associate Fellow Membership Examination. The didactic portion of the course includes basic science information in anatomy, microbiology, and histopathology, and is geared to implant dentistry.

OBJECTIVES
The course prepares the participants to:

• Familiarize themselves with current concepts in biomedical sciences as they relate to implant dentistry
• Systematically develop sequential diagnosis and treatment planning related to implant dentistry
• Understand the team concept as it relates to implant dentistry treatments
• Compare and evaluate the various implant systems
• Be prepared to take the American Academy of Implant Dentistry Associate Fellow Membership Exam
• Understand implant procedures by observing and performing live surgical and prosthetic demonstrations on patients.

ATTENDEE CRITERIA
 1) Each participant will be required to submit a copy of his/her current:

• TB skin tests - no more than 2 years old
• Chest x-rays - no more than 2 years old
• Hepatitis - current titer no more than 1 year old
• CPR card
• Current dental license.

2) Participants will be supervised by Loma Linda University School of Dentistry faculty.

CLINICAL CRITERIA

• Each patient will be a patient-of-record of Loma Linda University School of Dentistry.
• Treatment will be provided according to the G fee schedule.
• Treatment fees will be paid to the oral implantology clinic prior to completion of treatment.
• All scheduling, treatment plans, and financial information will be entered in the LLUSD clinical database by Center for Implant Dentistry staff.
• All remakes, failed implant replacements, and risk charges will be charged back to the Center for Implant Dentistry.
• In case of a risk event, the defense of the participant may have to be borne by their malpractice carrier.  In case of a punitive judgment, all costs will be borne by the participant.

The course is currently full--please call to be added to the waiting list. The course fee includes an interactive DVD implant dentistry course, breaks, lunches, and dinner. There will be no refunds after March 1, 2008.
