Faculty and students attend ADEA Annual Session The American Dental Education Association (ADEA), formerly
the American Association of Dental Schools, held its 78th Annual Session
& Exposition March 2 to 7, 2001, at the Hyatt Regency in Chicago,
Illinois. The annual session serves as the nation's foremost event
for dental educators and their corporate suppliers. More than 1,500 dental
school deans, faculty, and company representatives attended the event.
Twenty-five faculty and students from LLU attended. William Hooker, PhD, MFCC, associate dean for student affairs,
was elected chair-elect of the Student Affairs Section of the ADEA and
will serve as chair for 2002-2003. Dr. Hooker is also program chair of
the fall American Financial Aide Student Affairs meeting of the Student
Affairs section which will meet in Portland, Oregon, in October. Student officers include Sean Gubler, D3, who has been elected
Western Regional representative of the Student Section of the ADEA. Nathan
Dinsbach, D1, has been nominated to the Faculty Development Committee
in the Student Section; and Elizabeth Salem (DH'02) has been elected as
the National Hygiene Chair for her group. A feature article about the
student officers will appear in the next issue of Dentalgram. High-tech education and research was a focus of this year's
session, "Excelling Through Change: Vision, Action, Assessment."
Programs featured the latest trends in digital course curricula, web-based
instruction, and information technology as a life-long learning resource.
A technology fair with more than 50 exhibitors showcased new education,
record-keeping, and research database technologies. U.S. Surgeon General David Satcher, MD, PhD, was an invited speaker. Dr. Satcher released the first ever report on oral health in May pointing to disparities existing in America regarding how dental care is provided. The event featured nearly 50 faculty development workshops,
lunch and learn programs, networking receptions, and poster sessions.
The ADEA is the national representative of dental education. Its more than 3,000 members include all U.S. and Canadian dental schools, as well as hospital-based dental programs, allied dental schools, research institutions, and their faculty and students. University
