Dr. Heisler lectures at Russian dental conference

  Heisler

William H. Heisler, DDS, professor of restorative dentistry, International Dentist Program, presented a lecture on adhesive dentistry, "Modern Dental Materials," at Stomatology 2001 in Moscow, Russia, on February 9.

This national dental convention, held in the Moscow World Trade Center, was attended by dentists from as far away as Magadan, more than 5,000 miles from Moscow. In fact, to his surprise, one of Dr. Heisler's dentist friends from Magadan was in his audience.

During Dr. Heisler's six-day stay, he met with staff of the Adventist Health Center and presented the same lecture to the dentists, dental laboratory technicians, and staff as part of their weekly continuing education program. He also had an hour-long meeting with Dr. Vladimir Sadovski, general secretary of the Russian Dental Association, and publisher of six Russian language dental journals and newspapers.

Dr. Sadovski presented Dr. Heisler with a copy of the Russian dental journal Stomatological News, containing an article titled "Cosmetic Dentistry" written by 1998 IDP graduate Alexander Serdyukov, with special thanks for assistance in preparation of the article to William S. Seibly, DDS, PhD, also from IDP. Dr. Heisler first met Dr. Sadovskiwhen he visited the School in 1997.

Dr. Heisler, who has been studying the Russian language for 18 months, has made two previous trips, sponsored by Rotary International, to the Russian Far East to take dental care to children in Magadan and Palatka. His Rotary Club currently has funded grants amounting to $28,000 to take dental equipment to Russia and to study related environmental problems.

Dr. Heisler stated that in addition to attending the dental conference, he visited the Kremlin and several other prominent sites in Moscow in spite of sub-freezing temperatures almost the entire stay, with the thermometer registering -17°C (0°F) two nights.
