On Sunday, April 1, patients from toddlers to grandparents arrived in the
chilly, foggy morning air to attend the School's 11th annual Clinic With
a Heart. "I've worked for a local restaurant for 20 years," said one woman
who was near the front of the line, "and I've never had health insurance.
So I was excited to hear about Clinic With a Heart!" The event was staffed by 377 volunteers, including faculty, staff, predoctoral
and graduate students, and high school students. "This has become a University-wide event," says Mary Hartwell,
clinics manager. "Employees from housekeeping, campus cafeteria, campus
engineering, and media services volunteered for the event." This year local restaurants donated food to feed the faculty, students,
and staff. According to Ms. Hart well, the School provides between $18,000
to $20,000 worth of dentistry at no charge to the patients during this event.
Crest was a major contributor, providing T-shirts to the volunteers, and
complimentary toothpaste, toothbrushes, and floss to the patients. Also helping were local Baldyview ROP Dental Assisting School, and Chaffey
Jr. College Dental Assisting Program, who sent 50 students and instructors.
Jeni Christian provided the T-shirt design concept, assisted by Richard
Tinker of educational support services. University
