Students from Smiley Elementary School Tour Prince Hall

Jennifer Osborne tells children from Smiley Elementary School what is in their gift bags.

Nearly 80 children, ages 5 and 6, from Smiley Elementary School in Redlands recently toured the School of Dentistry on March 1. They were accompanied by teachers Cheryl Jenkins, Carolynn Reid, and Daidre Thies.

D4 students Sunil Ilapogu, Phil Grossman, Eugene Kim, and Jeff Takahashi served as student tour guides.

The children were instructed in oral hygiene and warned about sugar bugs. “One little boy,” says Jennifer Osborne, “asked how those sugar bugs got in there (his mouth) and he stumped Eugene Kim for a minute…he thought quickly and said they come from the air we breathe and food we eat and drink, and even though we brush them away they keep coming back so we have to keep brushing!

During the tour the kindergartners dressed up like future dentists and toured International Dentist Program clinic, main clinic, and the pediatric clinic.

The tour organizers were Mary Hartwell, dental clinics manager, Jeni Osborne, Robin Fierro, and Carrie Lopez, record analysts.

After the tour Robin Fierro and Carrie Lopez tell the children goodbye. Collin Christian poses for a photo during the tour.
