Administration
There has been some confusion regarding the begin and end dates for spring, summer, and fall quarters. Listed below are the quarter dates and holidays.

Spring Quarter: March 29-June 10
*Dentistry Senior quarter ends May 30 (Commencement). Dentistry Senior grades will be due June 2. All other grades are due June 14.
Memorial Day holiday: Monday, May 31

Summer break: June 11 - July 5
Independence Day holiday: Monday, July 5

Summer Quarter: Tuesday, July 6 -September 16
*Dental Juniors (new juniors-Class of '01) are taking National Boards Part I on Monday, July 12. They will be excused from classes and blocks the first week of the quarter to prepare for the exam. Their classes will begin Tuesday, July 13.
Labor Day holiday: Monday, September 6
Fall Break: September 17 - 26
Fall Quarter: September 27 - December 14
Thanksgiving break: November 24 - 28
Christmas break: December 15 - January 2

Center for Dental Research
*LLUSD is conducting an Anti Cavity Study in the new Center For Dental Research on Taylor Street. Our study is close to ending our recruitment of 4,500 participants, but still needs 1,000 more. We are asking you to help us successfully complete our mission! Employees, family members, and friends are welcome to participate with the following criteria:
  • Between 18 and 69 years of age
  • Have at least 10 uncrowned teeth
  • Have at least 1 filling

*Yiming Li, DDS, MSD, PhD, professor of restorative dentistry, has been appointed as Chairman of ASC MD156 Working Group for Biological Evaluation of Dental Materials, which is responsible for the revision of American National Standards Institute/American Dental Association Specification 41.

He also serves as US Expert on biological evaluation of dental materials for International Organization for Standardization (ISO).



*Jay S. Kim, PhD, professor of biostatistics, was an invited speaker at the statistics colloquium held on the campus of the University of California - Riverside on March 4, 1999. He delivered a one-hour lecture on "Concepts of Laplace Ordering and Its Applications in the Theory of Statistics, Survival Analysis, and Economics." More animated discussions on his lecture continued after the colloquium, with UCR faculty members, at a local restaurant.



Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
*We wish Philip Boyne, DMD, MS, professor of oral and maxillofacial surgery, a "get well soon." Dr. Boyne underwent two back surgeries, one on February 17 and the other on the 24th. He is doing very well and has started his rehabilitation at the medical center. Please join us in wishing him a speedy recovery.



Orthodontics
The American Board of Orthodontics has certified R. David Rynearson, SD'71, MS'87, assistant professor of orthodontics, as a Diplomate.

Dr. Rynearson's dental specialty practice in orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics is in Moreno Valley.

Certification as a Diplomate signifies a unique achievement. There are only 1,950 orthodontists throughout the world who are Diplomates. Certification involves an extensive review of the orthodontist's basic education, and an intensive assessment of his clinical expertise.

Dr. Rynearson is a member of several local and national dental associations.




Pediatric Dentistry

Pediatric dentistry graduate students have obtained sponsorship to the scientific meeting of the California Society of Pediatric Dentists on the cruise ship Viking Serenade. Restorative Dentistry
*Douglass Roberts, SD'66, MS'77, professor of restorative dentistry, gave a presentation entitled, "The Use of Computer and Video Camera for Clinical Examination Feedback to Large Groups" at the Section of Dental Informatics during the AADS meeting in Vancouver, BC.

*Tony Daher, DDS, MSEd, associate professor of restorative dentistry, was inducted as a member in the Academy of Fixed Prosthodontics.
