At 4:45 a.m., Charles Cutting, Jr., SDí68, and his wife Jane (my running partners) headed to the Los Angeles Athletic Club, where the Loma Linda Lopers running club have privileges to use the facilities before the race. As the starting time drew closer, we all became very nervous. We ate, drank lots of fluids, stretched, and prepared ourselves for the start of the race. The time had arrived. It was 8:30 a.m. and I started over to the starting line, about two blocks away. It was very intimidating standing among 22,000 other runners, most of them more prepared than I was. But when the starting gun went off, all I could think about was crossing the finish line. Well, 6 hours and 12 minutes later, my journey was completed. I was number 12,867 to cross the finish line. This made my fourth marathon: three in LA, and one in Santa Clarita. I will run again in the year 2000. John Ayon , RDA, OSA, works in GANR.
