Ten-year
admissions report
by Sylvia Davis, MA, director of admissions
In 10 years, dentistry applicants to Loma Linda University have more
than quadrupled, while the number of seats available in each class has
remained steady. If you have been admitted to that number, we consider
you the crême de la crême of future dentists.

Japanese dental hygiene students tour LLU
by Gina Downs, DH'99
On February 26, a group of dental hygiene students from Tokyo visited
the School of Dentistry. The 31 females and one male are students in a
two-year program, including one year of academics and one year internship
with a dentist.
After informal introductions, the Japanese students took a tour of the
School. Only three people spoke English, so I was glad to meet their interpreter,
Moto. They had heard stories of the anatomy museum and were anxious to
view it first. The students were amazed that most of the specimens were
real.
Next, we went to the dental clinic, where they had the opportunity to
observe the International Dentist Program, implant dentistry, radiology,
oral surgery, and the main clinic floor, where students were treating
patients.
The Japanese students were very impressed with infection control. They
liked the idea of gowns, protective equipment and the barriers used in
the operatory. The students, whose training does not include radiology,
noticed that there were LLUSD students taking radiographs on DEXTER and
questioned if they films were real. They were surprised to see that it
looked like real teeth on the radiographs. I explained to them that the
teeth, bone, and restorations are real to emulate a real person.
We concluded the tour at the Campus Cafeteria, where Gloria Hooker, departmental
secretary for dental hygiene, had arranged a beautiful luncheon for our
guests. Rhonda Stearns, DH'99, dental hygiene chaplain, asked the blessing.
After bowing to the students, I thanked them for coming and wished them
well in their dental hygiene profession.
Senior Daze
Some look more dazed than others, as the dentistry Class of 1999 listens
to practical advice on business management. NASDAD treated the class to
supper and door prizes in the University Church fellowship hall during
finals week, before Spring Break.
