From July 22 to 24, the School hosted Careers in Dentistry Workshop.
This is the 17th year the event has taken place. Dr. Duane Wacker directed
the program, and Roxanne Zamora and Leigh Ann Evans assisted in coordinating
the program in the admissions office.
The goal of the Workshop, informs Sylvia Davis, director
of admissions, is to give a positive view of the professional roles
in oral health care, with emphasis in dentistry and dental hygiene. Participants
attend to learn about these roles and to have an opportunity to shadow
student dentists and student dental hygienists.
Dr. Ben Grant began Careers in Dentistry at LLU in 1984, modeling it
after a program at Oregon Health Science University, and directed it for
several years. Dr. Kenneth Pierson also directed the program while he
was on the School faculty.
This year, 50 individuals attended the workshop. Only 18 of the participants
live in the Inland Empire. Of the participants eight came from out of
state, including the nearby state of Washington, as well as Tennessee,
Texas, and New York. One participant came from Canada. Ten of the enthusiastic
learners indicated they were primarily interested in dental hygiene while
40 are considering a career in dentistry.
The School arranged for participants to live on campus which 21 chose
to do, giving them an understanding of the university environment outside
the dental school. Others stayed with family and friends.
Presentations were made by Dr. Gerald Winslow from the Faculty of Religion,
Dr. Kenneth Wright from the department of anatomy, Dr. George Lessard,
director of research, and Jeane Pang, director of student financial aid
for the School of Dentistry.
School of Dentistry faculty members who participated included: Drs. Ron
Blank, Duane Wacker, Dave Rynearson, John Peterson, Stan Appleton, Robert
Handysides, Wallis Andelin, Klaus Wolfram, Wayne Tanaka, James Dunn, Joseph
Kan, Robert Clement, Clifford Herrmann, Paul McMillan, Mark Johnson, John
Leonora, Fred Kasischke, and John Leyman. Faculty members Nancy Pulliam,
Marilynn Heyde, and Sylvia Davis also participated.
