Clifford Gene Munce

January, 1927 to July, 2001

Clifford Gene Munce, SD’69, died peacefully July 15, 2001, at Idaho State Veterans Home in Boise, Idaho, due to complications of Alzheimer’s Disease. He was born January 1, 1927, in Los Angeles to C. John and Maria Munce. He attended La Sierra College and during his senior year was elected president of his class, turned 18 years old, and was drafted into the U.S. Army serving the last 19 months of WWII as a medic at Scofield Army Base in Honolulu. He married Mary Elizabeth Smith June 30, 1947, in Loma Linda. They continued their education at LLU and in 1950 he became a laboratory technologist and she, a registered nurse. The couple had five children, Lana John (SD’78; PG’88), Jennifer, Heidi, and Jerome. He earned his DDS degree in 1969, and then the family moved to Sandpoint, Idaho, where he practiced dentistry for 25 years. His son, John, would later join the School as a faculty member in the department of endodontics.


In 1982, Dr. Munce performed volunteer dental work in a refugee camp in Thailand. From 1988 to 1992, he served as director of Adventist Health Services Center, Nairobi, Kenya. When the family returned to the United States they traveled between California and Idaho carrying out relief services for dentists. An Adventist Church member, he used his talent in music, song leading, choir directing, and performing solos and duets with his wife. He is survived by his wife, Mary Elizabeth, five children and their spouses, nephews, and grandchildren.
