Department news
Dental educational services
- Frank Cortez-Flores, PhD, DDS, MS, MA, MPH, has been invited
to serve as a participant in the peer review meeting for the primary
care and oral health grant program, Department of Health and Human Services,
U.S. Public Health Service, Health Resources and Services Administration,
bureau of health professions office of extramural program review. He
will serve as a peer reviewer for the primary care and oral health cooperative
agreement program: Primary Care and Oral Health, an Interdisciplinary
Educational Approach to Meeting the Needs of High Risk Young Children.
Financial administration
- Josue Razafindrabe has joined financial administration as an
accountant. Please join the School family in welcoming Mr. Razafindrabe.
Prosthodontic residency program
- Program faculty and staff welcome the new residents: Drs. Amir
Khatami and Saeda Basta.
- Congratulations to Dr. Mauricio Malo and his wife, Tatiana
on their new baby girl, Isabella. This is their second child.
International Dentist Program
- Dr. Liuning Yu, International Dentist Program class of December,
2001, was primary author for a paper titled The N-terminal and
C-terminal domains of RAP1 are dispensable for chromatin opening and
GCN4-mediated HIS4 activation in budding yeast, which was accepted
for publication June 15, 2001 by the Journal of Biological Chemistry.
Dr. Yu received her PhD in molecular genetics from SUNY at Albany, New
York, in 2000.
Orthodontics
- In June, V. Leroy Leggitt, SD84, MS92, associate
professor of orthodontics, traveled to Paris, France, to present a paper
at the 3rd International Congress of Craniofacial and Maxillofacial
Distraction. The paper was titled, Magnetic resonance imaging
of normal lateral pterygoid muscles in brachyfacial, mesofacial and
dolychofacial adults.
- Six new residents joined the graduate orthodontic program in June:
Drs. Samuel Demirdji, Eunice Hong, Jack Kavanagh, and Shawn
Kim are all 2001 LLUSD graduates. Dr. Jon Robinson is a 1993
graduate of Oregon Health Science University. Dr. Monica Witte graduated
from University of Texas, Arlington in 2001. Dr. In-Hyang Park,
an orthodontist trained in Korea, has been accepted for a 12-month fellowship.
Restorative dentistry
- An article by Dr. Fred A. Berry, associate professor, A
Forced Rapid Extrusion Technique for Comprised Teeth, was published
in the June 2001 edition of Compendium of Continuing Education in Dentistry.
New employees & employee update
- The School family welcomes the following new employees: Tammy Aceras,
RDH, faculty dental office and periodontic residency program; Rob
Holland, educational computer tech, educational support services;
Brandie Noyola, patient care coordinator, clinical services division;
Veronica Rubio, dental insurance specialist, patient business
office; and Rafik Rofael, office aide, Center for Dental Research.
- Carrie Lopez, patient business office, has transferred to clinic
administration.

- The staff of Surgery Center for Dentistry wish to give thanks to everyone
in dental maintenance, graphics, and sterilization who
provided assistance with the preparation for the recent JACO accreditation.
