Retreat
 |
| During the Faculty Development Retreat,
Douglas Murphy, PhD, speaks about cultural differences. |
The School of Dentistry hosted a Faculty
Development Retreat July 14 to 15. The Retreat was held at the Shelter
Pointe Resort in San Diego.
Approximately 50 faculty participated, representing the departments of
restorative dentistry; the areas of oral diagnosis, radiology, and pathology;
periodontics; international dentist program; prosthodontics; dental hygiene;
and pediatric dentistry.
Faculty from the entire University were invited and faculty from the Teaching
Learning Center and the Schools of Medicine and Public Health attended.
Nancy Hudepohl, PhD, and Douglas Murphy, PhD, from the University of Texas
Health Sciences Center, San Antonio, were program speakers.
On the first day Dr. Murphy discussed designing tests and writing test
questions, and how to give clinical feedback. The second day was devoted
to the effects of cultural differences on educational process and learning
styles, and evaluations and feedback.

Retreat, held July 14 and 15. |
The planning of the Faculty Development
Retreat was well-supported by School administration, says Doyle
Nick, SD78, assistant professor, restorative dentistry. It
was decided to close the clinic on July 15 so that as many faculty members
as possible could participate.
The Faculty Development Committee expressed appreciation to Barbara Parker,
secretary, restorative dentistry, who interfaced with faculty and with
Shelter Pointe Resort to plan the event, and to Richard Cross, dental
school photographer, who helped with audiovisual needs and took photos
during the event.
The Faculty Development Committee has begun
long-range planning for the next Faculty Development Retreat, to be held
in January.
