| Department News Computer Services The following items of interest come from Andrew Yakush, PhD, director, Computer Services: * There is a virus called "Happy99.exe" going around the School of Dentistry. It comes as an attachment to e-mail messages. If you open it, it sets itself up to attach itself to mail you send out. If you receive mail with the Happy99 attachment, do not open it. In addition, inform the sender that you received it attached to their message (use a new message to not REPLY to their message) and also inform me (ayakush@sd.llu.edu) from whom you received it. This will help us to find the sources and get rid of it. Oral Diagnosis, Radiology, Pathology Pamela Lemus, SD'95, joined the oral diagnosis faculty on half-time basis at the beginning of spring quarter. She had been practicing general dentistry in Boulder, Colorado. Her husband, Tony, was transferred back to California and that is how we were so fortunate to recruit Dr. Lemus for our faculty. Dr. Lemus has been interested in advanced education and research even while in private practice. Her paper, "The Effects of a Laser Induced Tooth Whitening System," was published in 1998. The Lemus' have one son, aged 21 months, who keeps Dr. Lemus very busy on her days off! Orthodontics
Ivan Dus, MD, DDS, associate professor of orthodontics, has recently completed his four-year residency in neuropsychophysiological psychotherapy at a fully accredited program in Rome, Italy. Dr. Dus joined our faculty in 1997. His area of focus has been primarily TMJ pain management of the dysfunctional patient. With his comprehensive understanding of muscle physiology, Dr. Dus designed a computer program that allows the practitioner to recognize and quantify the level of muscular dysfunction in a patient and then plan a program of treatment. At the end of treatment, the patient can be reassessed and quantified to determine the magnitude of improvement. His program is being used and tested within the department to confirm findings already presented in over 5,000 case studies. The program has been used in Europe and Japan for the last 12 years. In the future, we will be presenting Dr. Dus' techniques and methods in technique courses here at Loma Linda University.
Pediatric Dentistry Periodontics Please welcome Gina Downs, DH'99, to the periodontics department as an oral hygiene instructor. Gina was president of her dental hygiene class, and spoke at commencement of her determination to enter the dental hygiene program after several tries. Now look at her! Restorative Dentistry Robert Kinzer, SD'58, professor of restorative dentistry and chair of the department for the last 22 years, has stepped down from administrative duties, but will continue to teach in the School of Dentistry. On Sunday, July 25, Dr. Kinzer was honored with a dinner and program by his colleagues and friends for his many years of service. Among the speakers were Drs. Don Beglau, Dan Hall, Bill Palmer, Lloyd Baum, Clyde Roggenkamp, Charles J. Goodacre, Doyle Nick, and Douglass Roberts, new chair of the department. Dr. Kinzer was given several gifts, including a birdwatching trip to southeastern Arizona's desert mountains and canyons, and a plaque. Presented by the staff and faculty of the department, the plaque reads, "We recognize the leadership of Robert L. Kinzer, DDS, Chairman, Department of Restorative Dentistry, 1977 - 1999. We appreciate your inspirational leadership. Your positive attitude and innovative ideas have provided a collegial, progressive, and stimulating environment. We thank you."
