Dean Charles J. Goodacre (left) and Hans Sjoren, Pierre Fauchard Academy representative (right), present the award to Peter Jimenez, SD'00.

Peter Jimenez, SD'00, has been awarded a $1,550 scholarship from the Pierre Fauchard Academy, an international honor dental organization.

The award recognizes Mr. Jimenez's "outstanding leadership, accomplishments, and dedication to advancement of dental literature."

The Academy's literature says that it "promotes the elevation of the standards and practices of the art and science of dentistry worldwide. Its purpose is to educate dental professionals with the latest techniques and foster a sharing of ideas to improve the practice of dentistry."

The Pierre Fauchard Academy was organized in 1936. The founders of the Academy selected the name of Pierre Fauchard in memory of the French dentist who is recognized as the "Father of Modern Dentistry." Fauchard lived from 1678 to 1761. His book Le Chirurgien Dentiste au Traite Des Dents, has been called the book which made dentistry a profession.

Two of the objectives of the Pierre Fauchard Academy are to encourage, through annual awards, outstanding contributions to the art and science of dentistry and service to the profession; and to encourage dental students and foster advancement of their professional and scientific standards and encourage continuing education for all members of the dental profession.

Have you staked out "your" lab space...

...in the new student laboratory? After the flooring was laid, cabinetry was being installed during the last week of January.

The Class of 2K...
...continues to grow. Brian and Pearl Black welcomed their daughter, Julia Tai, to life outside the womb at 4:04 a.m. on January 21. Julia tipped the scales at 8.5 pounds. Fortunately, Brian says, Julia looks like her mom.

Words by Brian Hanratty, SD'01, set to Don McLean's American Pie music
The song was performed at Pine Springs Ranch, at the dental family retreat

Verse 1
A long, long time ago
I can still remember
All my years in software industry
I sat there at my lofty post
And wondered what I wanted most
And decided to leave it all for dentistry
Prerequisite classes I snuck before work
Gen-chem, O-chem, physics, homework
I put in my applications
Almost never took vacations
My dentist buddies said 'hang in there'
But rejection letters I did fear
Until I was accepted here and there
And I picked LLU.

(Chorus)
So now I am a Dentistry Guy
Gonna make it, gotta take it,
Learned to cram all the time
My wife and kids have to put up with me
As I pursue this dental degree
As I pursue this dental degree

Verse 2

Well the first year we just hit the books
Late night I'd study with other folks
We smelled bad from anatomy
We learned to wax our crowns up right
The Bunsen burners we did light
Oh how I sweated biochemistry
Well I learned some histology
Dr. Engen taught us embryology
We learned to cast some gold
Those late nights sure got old
I was this middle age studying fool
I can't believe I'm in dental school
Oh to learn to work in drool
And help that bite work right
(Chorus)

Verse 3
The second year we just got spanked
Labs and lectures, to be frank
Were but a muddled memory
We had quizzes every day
For every lab project I sure prayed
In casting, I feared porosities
Well we had to make our margins clean
We festooned our dentures all night it seemed
Provisionals always shrank
And that monomer sure stank
But we held together and made it through
Even me, 'that older dude'
And board scores showed how our class ruled
Last year, in dental school
(Chorus)

Verse 4
Next year a new verse will tell
On how we struggled and what went well
With patients, points and proficiencies
I feel my goal is almost here
With every patient it gets nearer
There is just one more class before us
Who are soon to join the chorus
Of former students molded well
By great instructors as time will tell
I just hope I fare as well
Next year, in dental school
(Chorus)

Pre-dents tour School of Dentistry

A group of pre-dental students from San Diego State University toured the School of Dentistry and shadowed students on January 26. They toured all five California dental schools to help them plan their strategy in the application and acceptance process.
