School of Dentistry faculty attend retreat at Lake Arrowhead; other Schools participate By Doyle Nick Approximately 50 dental school faculty and 10 faculty from other LLU schools gathered near Lake Arrowhead Sunday and Monday of Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday. The attraction was a dental school-sponsored faculty retreat dedicated to educational excellence. Bill Hendricson from San Antonio, Texas, a world-renowned educational expert, was the guest speaker. His presentation focused on problem based learning, clinical teaching, and competency based education in relation to the latest research about the learning process. The participants enjoyed not only the meetings but also the comfortable facilities of the UCLA conference center. The Faculty Development Committee would like to thank Patty Hoerner, assistant director, continuing dental education, for many hours of work in arranging facilities, handouts, advertising, and much more. We also appreciate Richard Cross, photographic coordinator, who made a video of the presentations. The financial support of the School administration demonstrates commitment to faculty development. In addition, several departments have made this program possible providing short-term financing for the venue. Educational support services, and the offices of Ron Daily, PhD, associate dean for academic affairs, School of Dentistry; and Lisa M. Beardsley, PhD, MPH, executive vice president and vice president for academic affairs, LLU, worked together to provide announcements to faculty. Participants have expressed the desire that in the future there may be similar events to help us continue to achieve our goal to be good teachers.
