Dental and dental hygiene students participate
in screenings at Chaffey College
by Ron Forde
As a part of School of Dentistry growing
support of local health-care initiatives, a team of dental and dental
hygiene students from the School of Dentistry participated in a dental
screening program at Chaffey College in Rancho Cucamonga on October 24,
2001.
The screening exercise was part of the annual Health and Disability Fair
held on the Chaffey

College campus, and the goal of the Fair
was to promote awareness among students and staff regarding health and
disability issues.
The team from our dental school consisted of Kellie McNeil, Liz Salem,
Heather Wallace and Amber Holt, all senior dental hygiene students, and
James Ywom, D4 dental student. They were accompanied by faculty members
Rhonda Hamerslough, assistant professor, dental hygiene; and Dr. Ron Forde,
director, service learning program.
The half-day activities consisted of oral hygiene instruction, which included
poster displays and brochure distribution, smoking cessation information,
question-and-answer opportunities, all done at a booth provided on the
college quadrangle.
Over in the dental clinic for Chaffeys RDA program, the team also
provided oral exams for those who requested them, and for our dental hygiene
students, this was particularly exciting as a number of patients were
identified who might qualify as dental hygiene Board patients.
It is the first time our students have participated in this program, and
it is quite likely that we will be invited back later this year.
If so, it will be another opportunity for our students to interact with
students from another campus, to learn some of the needs of our local
communities, and possibly to find patients for their Board exercises.
