Dental hygiene students provide education in local communities
submitted by Stephanie Sobieski and Joann Grosso

Members of the senior dental hygiene class presented dental health topics to local communities. Here Joann Grosso (left) and Stephanie Sobieski (right) make a presentation to third graders at E.J. Marsha Elementary School in Chino. Their presentation stressed the importance of brushing and flossing. Also pictured is school teacher Dana Toolson.

During winter quarter, the senior dental hygiene class presented dental health topics in various local communities. The groups were asked to design their own lesson plans and then implement them. This project allowed the students to actively participate in the community and exposed them to various cultures.

Gretchen Cestero, Joann Grosso, and Stephanie Sobieski went to E.J. Marsha Elementary School in Chino. Their presentation, to a group of third-graders, stressed the importance of brushing and flossing.

“I enjoyed working with the children,” says Joann. Her experience was similar to that of Stephanie, who commented, “The kids loved us being there, and asked lots of great questions!”

Though the dental hygiene students were extremely busy preparing research studies and studying for finals, they appreciated the time they spent with the children. “It was a very rewarding and enjoyable experience,” says Gretchen.
