Alumni Student Convention to take place in February

Story panels chronicling the history of the School of Dentistry will soon be placed around Prince Hall. A new sidewalk is being installed in front of the School of Dentistry, in preparation for the first two signs, which have been planned to arrive in time for the Alumni Student Convention.

Be reunited with fellow School of Dentistry alumni during the 41st Annual Alumni Student Convention. Included in the weekend activities is the School of Dentistry annual golf tournament, the dental hygienists and assistants homecoming luncheon, table clinic presentations, class reunions, spiritual activities, and much more.

Sports fans will want to reserve space for Fridayÿs luncheon which will feature Mark McGwireÿs parents, John and Ginger. The McGwires will tell stories about coaching little league baseball, watching their son develop into a legendary ball player, and keeping priorities straight while maintaining a private dental practice. The National Dental Auxiliary will present þTongue Fu!,ú on Thursday, from 9:00 a.m. to noon. The event will feature Sam Horn, president of Life Balance, Inc. Her presentation provides tools to deal with difficult people, and is structured for the dentist, spouse, and staff. Ms. Hornÿs clients include Hewlett-Packard, Fortune 500 Forum, Four Seasons Resorts, and others. For more information on this event, call the national Dental Auxiliary at (909) 792-3037.

On Friday, the Annual Missionary Dentists & Prayer Breakfast will be held in Fellowship Hall from 7:00 to 8:00 a.m., and will feature Dr. Ken Pierson, SDÿ71, a returned missionary from Blantyre, Malawi, and Zimbabwe, and Dr. Piersonÿs son, Kenneth, SDÿ98, who has served in Moscow, Russia, and Lilongwe, Malawi Africa.

On Friday, February 7, current research by faculty and students will be presented as table clinics in Coleman Pavilion from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Participants who view all presentations will be awarded two free California continuing dental education credits after completing a Table Clinic Questionnaire.

Friday evening, Gerald Winslow, PhD, dean, Faculty of Religion, will preside over the Student Dedication for the members of the dental class of 2004 and the dental hygiene class of 2002. As freshmen students enter, they will be presented with a personalized, leather-bound Bible. The seniors will receive lab coats embroidered with their names. Dr. Winslow will speak on þBusiness or Profession?ú

According to Kathleen Moore, MHIS, director, continuing dental education and Alumni Association, students have commented that the Bibles, imprinted with their name and professional title, have brought peace and direction to their lives during challenging times in school and beyond.

Steve Darmody, a Christian vocalist, will perform for the Mission Benefit Concert on Sabbath, February 10, in the University Church.

Comprehensive tours of the School will be held Thursday and Friday afternoons.According to Ms. Moore, the tour provides valuable insight, and participants have commented that is first time many understand the complexity of the school and clinics and how they work together.

On Sabbath at 4:00 p.m., Steve Darmody, a talented Christian baritone, will perform for the mission Benefit Concert. Mr. Darmody performs more than 100 concerts each year, and has been in music ministry since 1980. His music can be heard on inspirational Christian radio throughout the United States where his songs minister to people of all ages. The Mission Benefit Concert is sponsored by the National Dental Auxiliary, and will be held in the University Church.For information about the Homecoming Banquet, to be held Thursday, Feburary 8, at 6:30 p.m. in Wong Kerlee International Conference Center, Coleman Pavilion, see below.
