Frank Cortez-Flores, PhD, DDS MS, MA, MPH, attended the Summer 2002 Geriatric Institute: Challenges of Physical Disability in an Aging Population, that was held in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The Institute is co-sponsored by the New Mexico Geriatric Education Center at University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center School of Medicine and Indian Health Service Elder Care Initiative. As a member of the Society of American Indian Dentists (SAID), Dr. Cortez-Florez is interested in the health of the American Indian elderly population and in helping to develop a comprehensive interdisciplinary approach to their health care.
He also contributed to the 2002 Summer Workshop “Introducing Public Policy Issues in Aging into the Curriculum” June 23-27. The workshop took place in the Center for Policy Research in the Maxwell School of Syracuse University, Syracuse, New York.

Additionally, he was invited to present his study, “A Regional approach to a dengue fever prevention and control program following a natural disaster” for the 52nd Annual Southwest Conference on Diseases in Nature Transmissible to Man, June 6 and 7 in Houston, Texas. The conference was sponsored by the Zoonosis Control Division of the Texas Department of Health and the Texas Health Foundation, and was co-hosted by the University of Texas School of Public Health and the Houston Department of Health and Human Services.

He was also invited to present the same study at the 60th Annual Meeting of the U.S.–Mexico Border Health Association that was held in the city of Chihuahua, state of Chihuahua, Mexico, June 4 to 7.

Endodontics

Dr. Shahrokh Shabahang, associate professor, endodontics, received his PhD degree in microbiology and molecular genetics during Graduate School commencement ceremonies on Sunday, June 9.






Dr. Wallis E. Andelin, who completed the advanced education program in endodontics in June, has been nominated for inclusion in the National Dean’s List for winter quarter, 2002. This national publication lists students of superior achievement who are in the upper 10 percent of their class. Dr. Andelin was nominated for this honor by Bart Rippon, PhD, dean, Graduate School.

Congratulations

Congratulations to Carrie Lopez, senior assistant to the dental clinics manager, clinic administration, on receiving her bachelor’s degree from California Baptist University in May. Carrie is currently working on her master’s degree in primary education in pursuit of her dream to become a kindergarten teacher.





Congratulations also, to Angela Butler, who works a part-time employee in sterilization as a laboratory helper. Angela graduated with AA and AS degrees from Riverside Community College on June 11, 2002.
