Dental Educational Services
Frank Cortez-Flores, PhD, DDS, MS, MA, MPH, recently returned
from the Center for Disaster and Humanitarian Assistance Medicine, University
of the Health Sciences symposium Medical Preparedness and Planning
of Man-made Disasters held in conjunction with the U.S.Mexico
Border Health Association 59th Annual Meeting, Health Along the
Border, a Shared Commitment, in Las Cruces, New Mexico. He presented
the results of his study Dengue, aedes aegypti, and hurricane reconstruction:
a shared commitment following a natural disaster. He also contributed
his third lecture, Dengue, aedes aegypti, and hurricane reconstruction
in the Caribbean and Central America: prevention and control following
a natural disaster to the Supercourse web site. The Supercourse
provides Internet-based distance learning material for health-related
students who are beginners in epidemiology and global health.
Dental Hygiene
- Congratulations to Debi Gerger, assistant professor, who received
her Master of Public Health degree June 10 from the School of Public
Health.
Orthodontic Department
- Mark Batesole, DDS, MS (00) has joined the department
as a part-time faculty member. Dr. Batesole is a 1998 graduate of the
University of Southern California dental school and a 2000 graduate
of the LLUSD orthodontic program. His main areas of involvement in the
program will be in research, graduate, and predoctoral instruction,
and ZeroBase system administration and education. Dr. Batesole will
also be involved in the evaluation and management of the recently acquired
NewTom 3D imaging system.
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
- Alan Herford, DDS, MD, assistant professor, recently presented
a paper at the 3rd International Conference on Distraction Osteogenesis
in Paris. The study was titled Maintaining Vector Control During
Distraction Oseogenesis.
Pediatric Dentistry
- The department welcomes four new dental assistants: John Ayon,
Claudia Oronoz, Michelle Mosley, and Patty Stoles.
RestorativeImplant Dentistry
- Two articles were recently published by Periklis Proussaefs, PG00,
assistant professor, implant dentistry.
- The first article, Histologic evaluation of threaded HA-coated
root-form implants after 3.5 to 11 years of function: a report of 3
cases, was published in International Journal of Periodontics
and Restorative Dentistry, 2001: 21:21-29.
- The second article, titled Immediate loading of single root
form implants with the use of a custom acrylic stent, was published
in the Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry, 2001: 85:382-385. Both articles
were co-authered by Jaime Lozada, PG87; 95, director, implant
dentistry program.
New employees
The School family welcomes the following new employees:

Congratulations
- Congratulations to Jennifer Christian, clinic administration,
who was married June 17th, 2001 in a private ceremony to Daryl Osborne.
Congratulations to the following employees who have earned certifications:
Teresa Nenn, faculty dental office, earned her RDA, Michelle
Tindall (faculty endodontics) earned her CDA, and Michelle Ayon,
Surgery Center, Dentistry, earned her OSA.
Employee changes
- Shannon Harris now works part-time as a secretary for grad
endodontics. She transferred from dental assisting; Cheryl Bellrose
in now a full-time records analyst for endodontics; and Maria Melgoza
is the new supervisor for oral implantology.
