Memorial service held for Bernard Byrd

Byrd & wife

A memorial service was held Saturday, July 14, in the University Church of Seventh-day Adventists for Dr. Bernard C. Byrd, who served the School for many years as chair of the oral and maxillofacial surgery department.

Dr. Byrd came to Loma Linda University in 1959 from private practice in Decatur,

Georgia. Following postgraduate studies, he returned to the School in 1964 and soon became chairman of oral and maxillofacial surgery, a title he held until his retirement in 1995. Dr. Byrd and colleague Dr. Elmer Kelln started the residency program in this specialty, with the first graduate in 1968.

A memorial service was held July 14 to celebrate the life of Dr. Bernard Byrd. Here, Dr. Byrd and his wife, Mary Ellen, are shown attending a ceremony during Alumni-Student Convention in February, 2000, naming the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Clinic in his honor.
