The Orthodontic Alumni Association held their annual meeting,
golf tournament, and banquet Thursday, June 7 and Friday, June 8.
Orthodontic residents, alumni, and several faculty members
met early Thursday morning for a golf tournament, held this year at Redlands
Country Club.
Winners of the four-person scramble were residents Timothy
Elison, Marc Larson, Aaron Rondon, and Chris Alex, Forestadent representative.
Members of the orthodontic alumni, faculty, residents, and
staff gathered Thursday evening, June 7, at The Castaway Restaurant in
San Bernardino to honor graduating residents at the 12th Annual Resident,
Faculty, Alumni Banquet.
Following a buffet supper, Dr. Bruce Heinrich, incoming orthodontic alumni
president, began the evenings events by welcoming the class of 2001
as members.
Dr. John Cornali, class representative, gave the student response. In
addition to thanking faculty for their teaching efforts, the class gently
roasted the faculty by presenting them with personalized license plates,
all hilariously accurate in their eight-character statements. When the
laughter died down, each resident presented a short review of his or her
masters research project. Following are their topics:
Dr. Virginia Bernal: Evaluation of Alveolar and Soft-Tissue Changes
after Muscular Release Surgery in Patients Undergoing Fixed Orthodontic
Therapy; Dr. James Choi, Effect of Thermocycling on Orthodontic
Adhesives as Measured by the Tensile Bond Strength; Dr. John Cornali,
A Continued Investigation of Craniofacial Growth in Infant Heart Transplant
Recipients Receiving Cyclosporine; Dr. Nathan Cotten, Optimum Bonding
Time of Four Different Curing Lights; Dr. Daryl Proctor, Fracture
Properties of Different Orthodontic Bonding Materials; Dr. Shane Witherow,
A Comparison of the Semi-Adjustable Articulator and the Virtual Articulator
by Centric Relation and Centric Occlusion Contacts.

Dr. Caruso, chair, presented Dr. Cornali with the Roland D. Walters Research
Award, given to honor residents for excellence in research. Dr. Caruso
also presented awards to a number of faculty to acknowledge their many
years of service to the department: Dr. Ruel Bench and Dr. Gary Kevorkian,
10 years; Dr. Raymond Sugiyama, 25 years; and Dr. James Wise, 30 years.
Each year, as part of the golf tournament, the Orthodontic
Alumni Association sponsors a raffle of items donated by several orthodontic
supply companies. More than $25,000 in orthodontic instruments and aids
were donated for the 2001 tournament. Drs. Kevorkian, outgoing president,
and Heinrich, president-elect, raffled a wide variety of items, from pliers
and cases of brackets, to curing lights and computer software. Following
the raffle, Dr. Caruso presented closing remarks which included a roast
of the graduating residents.
The orthodontic alumni events concluded Friday, June 8, with the continuing
education lecture and alumni business meeting. Dr. Terry Sellke, president
of the Foundation for Orthodontic Research and a faculty member at University
of Illinois at Chicago, lectured on Bioprogressive Philosophy and Practice
Management.
