Department news, July 1999
Administration
* William Hooker, PhD, associate dean for student affairs, spoke
at the University of Utah School on Alcoholism and Other Drug Dependencies.
He was asked by the Dental Section there to make a presentation on LLUSD's
substance abuse program. Dr. Hooker has also conducted a study, "A
15-Year Review," of the participants of the program in the Schools
of Dentistry and Medicine, which was part of the presentation.

PHONATHON
BRINGS AID TO SCHOOL OF DENTISTRY
Gary Wuchenich, SD'77, MS'94,
was among the alumni and faculty who participated in the 1998-99
Annual Fund Campaign phonathon, which brought in more than $191,000
in pledges this year from alumni around the country. The effort,
sponsored by the Alumni Association Century Club, stimulated more
than 700 alumni to make pledges. Projects to be supported by these
funds include student mission clerkships, the building campaign,
personalized Bibles for incoming students, Service Learning, scholarship
and loan funds, as well as the operations of the Alumni Association
office. More than 50 alumni and faculty members participated in
the phonathon this year. |

Admissions
Careers in Dentistry will be held on the Loma Linda University campus
July 25 - 27, when prospective dental and dental hygiene students will
visit the School of Dentistry for seminars, hands-on laboratory sessions,
tours, and shadowing upperclass students in the clinic.
Center for Dental Research
The staff of the Clinical Research Center has completed the baseline examination
of all 4,500 patients enrolled in the Colgate Dentifrice Study, reports
Ralph Feller, DMD, professor of dental educational services.
Clinic Administration
California Board exams were held from June 13 - June 16. Two hundred candidates
participated.
Dental Anesthesiology
* Dental anesthesia is gaining three new residents on July 1, 1999. Darren
Fee, DDS, from Canada, Jeff Fisher, SD'99 and David Rogers,
SD'99.
* John Khalaf, SD'97, Donald Lee, SD'97, Bonnie Marek,
DDS, and Fernando Muñoz , SD'97, have left with certificates
in dental anesthesiology. Congratulations.
Endodontics
Welcome to new students in the advanced education program in endodontics:
* Erol Apaydin received his DDS from the University of Iowa College
of Dentistry in 1984. Dr. Apaydin served as a general dentist in the Naval
Dental Center, Orlando, Florida. He is married and has two children.
* Robert Handysides, SD'93, was a solo dental practitioner in Kingston,
Ontario, Canada, and was chairman of the Kingston SDA Elementary School.
He is married and has two children.
* Nishan Odabashian received his DMD from the Tufts University
School of Dental Medicine, Boston, in 1991. He worked in private practice
in Glendale, California, and serves as president of the Armenian Dental
Society of California.
Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery
* We congratulate David H. Gilbert, DDS, on his June 1999 graduation.
*Welcome to first year resident, Todd C. Cooper, DDS.
Orthodontics
* A new class in orthodontics comprised of Virginia Bernal (DMD,
University of Pennsylvania, 1998); James C. Choi (DDS, USC, 1991);
John M. Cornali (DDS, University of Missouri-Kansas City, 1981);
Nathan D. Cotten, (DDS, Baylor College of Dentistry, 1998); Daryl
L. Proctor, SD'94; and D. Shane Witherow, SD'98, began the study
of orthodontics on June 28, 1999. A welcoming picnic by faculty, second
year students and staff was held for them at Sylvan Park on Tuesday, June
29.
" Orthodontics is host to new three-month preceptor Adnan Merhi,
DDS, MS, an orthodontist educated at Bucharest University, and Marmara
University, Turkey.

Pediatric Dentistry
We welcome a new full-time assistant professor, Maria Sheu
(Kidwell), SD'94, PG'96,who begins July 1, 1999.
*We congratulate the graduate students who have finished our program:
Dean Walker, SD'97, Jenny Lee, SD'97, and Chris Kanas,
SD'97.
* We welcome our new graduate students: Jennifer Barry, SD'99,
Eddie Chang, SD'99, Jennifer (Stilson) Hoffer, SD'99.
* J. Todd Milledge, SD'88, PG'95, chair of pediatric dentistry,
thanks all the individuals who prayed and expressed concern for his family
after his wife Jenny's (DH'94) recent auto accident. Their son
Ian is doing fine and Jenny is recovering from her broken leg.
Restorative Dentistry
* Ron Forde, SD'83, and 1998 Alumnus of the Year, has moved back
to Loma Linda after many years of dental missionary practice in Zaire
and Zimbabwe. He is now a full-time assistant professor of restorative
dentistry, and director of service learning.
* Laura Erlandson, SD'95, and husband Dr. Greg Zimmerman, had their
first child, Claire Elice Zimmermann, on May 17. Little Claire and her
parents are in good health, and moving to Wisconsin for a year.
