Dr. James Crawford, executive associate dean, and Dr. Quint
Nicola, assistant professor of oral diagnosis, recently visited our
international dental clinics in the Inter-American Division, including
Guyana, Antigua, Grenada, Trinidad, St. Kitts, St. Vincent, and Tobago.
They met with Conference and Union administrators, clinicians and staff
in each clinic, and members of the community, to evaluate current status
and discuss future plans. Each clinic has its challenges and each one
is a blessing to the community it serves.

Group Practices
Bruce Walter, SD’73 has been named director of group practices
in the predoctoral clinic.

Implant Dentistry
Jaime Lozada, PG’87; PG’95, was invited to give a “Surgical
and Prosthetic Implant Seminar with lecture and Live Surgery” at
Nobel Biocare USA, INC., in Yorba Linda on April 18–19. He was also
invited to lecture in Sao Paulo, Brazil on May 11. Dr. Lozada’s lecture
topic was “Criteria for Selection of Biomaterials and Techniques
in Implant Dentistry.”
Dr. Alejandro Kleinman hosted a course, “Surgical and Prosthetic Procedures in Implant Dentistry” to a group of dentists from Chile May 7–11. He also hosted a course for a group from Peru May 21–25.
Two scientific articles from faculty of the graduate program in Implant Dentistry were published recently. They are: “Site Development for Anterior Single Implant Esthetics: The Dentulous Site,” by Drs. Joseph Kan and Kitichai Rungcharassaeng, published in the March, 2001 issue of Compendium; and “Immediate Placement and Provisionalization of Replace Implants for Maxillary Anterior Single Tooth Replacements,” by Drs. Kan and Rungcharassaeng, published in the Spring, 2001 issue of Nobel Biocare’s GLOBAL Forum International Newsletter.
Congratulations to the three students graduating from Implant Dentistry
this month: Dr. John Willardsen, Dr. Mac-Rey Ojano, and Dr.
Gregory Kammeyer.
Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery
Dr. Philip Boyne and Dr. Alan Herford recently attended the 4th International Implantology Conference in Cairo, Egypt. Dr. Boyne spoke on rhBMP’s use in the maxillofacial region and Dr. Herford spoke about using distraction osteogenesis to reconstruct alveolar defects prior to implant placement. Many dentists attended the conference, and the presentations were well received.

Susan McCormick, DDS, MS, chair, was recently published in Craniofacial
Distraction Osteogenesis. Dr. McCormick was first author in chapters titled,
“Craniofacial Bone Transport,” and “Distraction Osteogenesis:
Overcoming the Challenges of a New Technique.”

Restorative
Roger Plata, SD’74, professor, will retire at the end of spring
quarter. Dr. Plata is moving to the Visalia, California, area
.

Congratulations to Barbara Parker, secretary, who received her AA in business information systems from Crafton Hills College on May 24.
New employees
Rene Fahey, OSA has joined the endodontic clinic as a full-time dental assistant. She and her family recently moved to the area from Long Beach. Ms. Fahey replaces Shannon Harris, who has accepted a position in private practice.
Kathleen Kavanagh has joined the dean’s office as senior administrative
secretary. She is Jack Kavanagh’s (SD’01) mother. Dr. Kavanagh
graduated last year.
