Department news

Implant Dentistry

Joseph Kan, SD’90, PG93, assistant professor, lectured at the AAID Western District Meeting in University City March 20 to 22. Dr. Periklis Proussaefs, assistant professor, and Drs. Alvaro Farnos and Kiyotaka Umezu (second-year residents), and Dr. Edgar Grageda (third-year resident), also lectured. Drs. Aladdin Al-Ardah and Kyung-Soo Choi (first-year resident), and Dr. Miguel Estrella (second-year resident) participated in a hands-on diagnostic workshop.
Alejandro Kleinman, assistant professor, lectured at the First Symposium on Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) and Its Growth Factors in Lake Buena Vista, Florida, in March.
Jaime Lozada, PG’87, PG’95, professor/ program director, has been invited by Nobel Biocare to lecture in Australia and New Zealand in June, and has been asked by California Dental Board to participate on the onsite team for foreign dental schools.
Dr. Periklis Proussaefs, assistant professor, has been awarded the Tillman Award from the American Academy of Fixed Prosthodontics.
Kitichai Rungcharassaeng, assistant professor’s poster presentation, “Peri-implant tissue response of immediate anterior single tooth replacement: 1-year results,” was presented during the Academy of Osseointegration meeting in Dallas, Texas in March.
• Edgar Grageda, third-year implant dentistry resident, is the recipient of the American Academy of Implant Dentistry Research Foundation Grant. At the conclusion of his research project, Dr. Grageda will submit his manuscript for publication in the Journal of Oral Implantology.

 

International Dentist Program

• Dr. John Whittaker, professor, has become a grandfather to Annalea Taylor. Baby Annalea was born April 28, 2002, and was 6 pounds, 13 ounces, and 20 inches long.

 

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

Alan S. Herford, SD’94, MD, has accepted the position of chair, department of oral and maxillofacial surgery effective June 1, 2002.
Dr. Wayne Tanaka will continue his excellent oversight of the predoctoral program.
The dean thanks Philip J. Boyne, MS’61, for his excellent interim leadership in the department.

 

Oral Diagnosis, Radiology and Pathology

Stan Appleton, SD’72, professor, has been named a Diplomate of the American Board of Orofacial Pain.

 

Welcome

A warm welcome to new employees Mallory Shamblin, dental assistant, orthodontics, and Daniel Tapia, dental assistant, clinic supply. Mr. Tapia is a recent graduate from Chaffey College.

 

Congratulations

Congratulations to Marjorie Sweet, part-time secretary, endodontics department. Marjorie graduated from the University of Redlands in late May with a BA degree in communicative disorders.
