Alumni of the Year revealed at convention
Dr. Carpenter was cited for his service to the Alumni
Association (he was president during 1997-1998, and serves on its Board
of Directors), and for his community service (he is the founder of Compassion
Clinic, an interfaith free dental clinic in San Bernardino).
Says Dr. Carpenter, "It is a tremendous responsibility to do what I can, because I feel that Loma Linda University is so important to God's work, and the body of Christ. The people around the school feel the same way. Everybody's being blessed by the Compassion Clinic, the patients, the students, the staff." The service learning department of the School of Dentistry provides student dentists and hygienists for Compassion Clinic, and Dr. Carpenter's Redlands dental practice, including his wife Barbi, daughter and son-in-law (Erin Carpenter Estey, SD'98, and Mark Estey, SD'98), and associated staff, treat patients twice a month. Dr. Carpenter received a plaque and gifts from the Alumni Association's president, Dr. Judith Strutz. She said, "Mark, you have shown us what Christ-centered dentistry is all about. The way you treat your patients as though they were Christ is an inspiration to us. Your time and loving endeavors during your monthly trips to Mexico to treat patients, your dedication to Compassion Clinic, and your unfailing efforts with the Alumni Association speak volumes from your heart. You are a wonderful ambassador for Loma Linda University School of Dentistry." Dr. Carpenter's citation reads, "An exemplary Christian professional; respected by colleagues; admired by community, church and school; and one who represents the highest ideals of his alma mater." "I felt undeserving of the award," responded Dr. Carpenter,
"but I feel committed to the University, for what it stands for,
and what it's going to do in the future. My daughter and son-in-law believe
that God has us here to work with the School. We're all working together,
unified by Christ, to fulfill His great commission. The world is looking
to the Adventist Church for health care."
During the past 35 years, Ms. Davis has practiced in general dentistry and periodontal offices in the United States. She and her husband Tom, an LLU physical therapy alumnus, have served as missionaries in Libya, Lebanon, Puerto Rico, and Guam, and recently accepted a call to Bangladesh. They both returned to Loma Linda University to earn a Masters in Public Health between mission appointments. Ms. Davis' gifts far exceed the field of dental hygiene. Her love and devotion for her own four children has been shared with other children of the world. While serving in Honduras, she worked in a well baby clinic, and assisted in child care and nutrition education. She has been a source of new ideas and creative leadership in children's ministries, and is admired for her service to God and humanity. The citation reads, "For her unselfish service in many international settings; for her involvement with dental health education projects in the community; and for being an inspiring Christian and professional role model. We honor our respected colleague and God's humble servant."
