Bernard Byrd honored by OMFS clinic name
Family, friends and colleagues joined Dr. and Mrs. Byrd for the event which marked the expansion of the Oral Surgery Clinic into space vacated by the dental anesthesia department, which moved into the new addition of Prince Hall. Dr. Byrd came to Loma Linda University in 1959 from private practice in Decatur, Georgia. Following postgraduate studies, he returned to the School in 1964 and soon became chairman of oral and maxillofacial surgery, a title he held until his retirement in 1995. Dr. Byrd and colleague Dr. Elmer Kelln started the residency program in this specialty, with the first graduate in 1968. Charles J. Goodacre, DDS, MSD, dean of the School of Dentistry, also recognized the many donors who had contributed financially to support the renovation of the surgery clinic. In particular, he honored the dental Class of 1975A and Howard Kim, DDS, a graduate of the Class of 1967. On behalf of Dr. Kim's gift to the remodeling, the reception area was
named for his nephew, Dr. Milton Lau, who was a graduate student in oral
and maxillofacial surgery at the time of his death in 1994. Attending
the ceremony was Dr. Lau's wife, Katherine Lau, MD, and their son, Milton,
parents Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Lau, and sister Colleen Lau.
