Center for Dental Research
The Center for Dental Research has recently completed two studies (the
eight week Relief of Dentinal Hypersensitivity and the two month Vitamin
Study). We would like to thank each one of you that participated for making
our studies successful.
The research department will be starting three new studies in March 2000.
Please contact me should you or anyone you know be interested in participating.
This is to include anyone you are providing dental care for also.

Dental Hygiene
Welcome to new dental hygiene department secretary, Dana Lane. She is

sister-in-law is Melissa Wages, senior dental student. Dana has a zest
for life, and is full of energy and enthusiasm.
Dental Maintenance
* Congratulations to Jim Redfield, until recently director of Dental Maintenance,
on his partial retirement. He's returning to what he did 30 years ago
when he first came to the School of Dentistry: teaching radiology four
days a week in the School of Dentistry, and acting as a Special Projects
Manager.
* Chuck Yetter, who has worked at LLUSD for nine years (and for the University
for 29 years total), is the new department director as of February 1.
Endodontics
Congratulations to Amy Meyer, of the endodontic clinic, and John Ruzzamenti,
SD'99, on their recent engagement. The groom-to-be proposed on a romantic
gondola ride at the Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas. They are planning an
October wedding.
Orthodontics
The 21st Annual LLU Orthodontic Alumni meeting was held at the San Bernardino
County Medical Society, Colton, on Feb. 11, 2000. The speaker was Lawrence
F. Andrews, DDS, MS, clinical professor at the University of California,
San Francisco and co-director of the Lawrence F. Andrews Foundation for
Orthodontic Education and Research. Dr. Andrews' topic was "Andrews'
Trilogy," which involves the Andrews(tm) Straight-Wire Appliance(r)
System that he invented and the Six Keys to Normal (Optimal) Occlusion(c)
he authored. Dr. Andrews presented an informative lecture that was well
received by the over 40 guests in attendance.
The annual alumni business meeting was held in conjunction with Dr. Andrews'
lecture on February 11 with Gary Kevorkian, SD'86, MS'90, initiated as
incoming president, Bruce Heinrich, SD'84, MS'87, as president-elect,
Craig Chamberlain, SD'89, MS'93, as treasurer, and Shelley Rathbun, SD'92,
MS'95, and Bernard Chang, SD'93, MS'96, as alumni board directors. Alumni
president, Doug Brown, DDS, MS'91, presided over the meeting.
The day prior to the meeting, Feb. 10, the Orthodontic Alumni Annual
Golf Tournament was held at the Moreno Valley Ranch Golf Club. The rain,
which has become a tradition, didn't keep most of the 46 students, alumni,
faculty, staff and company representatives from playing. Twenty-eight
companies donated prizes of instruments and supplies valued at $45,454
that were raffled at the dinner following the tournament. Doug Brown,
DDS, MS'91, planned and coordinated both the tournament and the meeting.
* We have a new clinic secretary we'd like to welcome to our department,
Lana Hay. You may recognize her face and name, she was formerly the telephone
operator. We're pleased to have her join our team.
Restorative Dentistry
Mark Estey, SD'97, prosthodontics graduate student, and his wife Erin
(Carpenter) Estey, SD'97, are thrilled to be parents. Their first child
was born on February 20. Neely Alexandra Estey was 8 1/2 lbs, 21 inches
long. Auntie Kathy Estey Respicio, who works in oral pathology, will be
glad to babysit.
Service Learning
On February 13, 2000, four of our dental hygiene students participated
in a morning of dental screenings at the Etiwanda High School in Rancho
Cucamonga. The invitation came from Patricia Douglas and the Loveland
Church which worships at the above site. Due to the heavy rains which
were falling throughout the morning, the attendance at our table was lower
than expected, but about 60 persons (mostly children) were screened and
given oral health care instructions. A number of the adults seen were
interested in visiting our School of Dentistry for further tests or treatments
and a few might qualify as Board patients for our hygiene students.
The students who participated were Carmen Chavez, Julie Jakovac, Elizabeth
Brutus and Christine Hendricks. They were supervised by Ron Forde, SD'83,
assistant professor of restorative dentistry and director of service learning.
