Operative Dentistry convention elects LLUSD professor
to office
Dr. Roggenkamp was involved with the oral testing phase in which both of the candidates who challenged it were successful. One was a male Naval dental officer who had flown to Chicago from San Diego, and the other was a recent female graduate of Indiana University's master's degree program in Operative Dentistry who had flown all the way from Bangkok, Thailand to be tested. These two new board inductees make a total of 37 dentists who have been certified by the American Board of Operative Dentistry since its inception in 1981. Three dentists from Loma Linda University School of Dentistry have been certified by this highly regarded board --Robert Kinzer, SD'58, professor of restorative dentistry (as one of the board's founders), Dan Frederickson, SD'64 (who is now a professor at University of the Pacific), and Dr. Roggenkamp. The following day Board meetings were scheduled both back-to-back and overlapping. Dr. Roggenkamp was voted secretary-treasurer of the American Board of Operative Dentistry. This is a challenging new duty he is looking forward to performing for the next two to four years, besides already serving as a member of both the Study Club Committee and the Scientific Sessions Committee. In addition, he serves as a review editor for their internationally recognized journal, Operative Dentistry. The main part of the meeting consisted of seven world-class continuing education presentations by leading lecturers in restorative dentistry. This culminated Friday afternoon with over 40 table clinic presentations. Dr. Roggenkamp, with the assistance of Dr. Kinzer who was unable to attend, represented Loma Linda's summer selective short course in gold foil with his table clinic entitled, ÒTeaching Simplified Direct Gold.Ó Direct gold is still the technique of choice for most simple to moderate gold casting repairs. It is especially practical for restoring endodontic openings made for access through gold crowns, for discrete gold margin defects, and for new lesions occurring adjacent to previously placed gold margins. This table clinic was well received as offering a proven short-term instruction method that might be adopted by various study clubs and other dental schools who wish to extend their procedural capabilities. The instruction of gold foil has recently been omitted from the curriculum of most dental schools in North America but is still an option for the clinical portion of the American Board of Operative Dentistry. The ABOD examination process is as fair as it is thorough. More applicants are encouraged. Please contact Dr. Roggenkamp, cRoggenkamp@sd.llu.edu; if you or anyone you know is interested.
