According to Karen Simpson, DH'66, MPH, assistant professor and chair of the dental hygiene department, the award is given to the all-around dental hygiene student who embodies the attributes of the ideal student. Ms. Tatum's interest in dental hygiene began in high school. She researched the dental field and while in college, worked in a number of dental offices in various capacities. She enjoyed one-on-one contact with patients and helping them better their lives by improving their dental health. She has been involved throughout her education in school, church and community activities. She has organized clinic and class activities. "In clinic, she is thorough, eager to learn and be the very best," says Ms. Simpson. "She truly cares about her patients, classmates, and is very helpful to faculty and staff." Ms. Tatum has organized board screenings, National Board reviews, and off campus health fairs and screenings. She is extremely motivated, and takes her profession very seriously. Her personal motto reflects the University motto, "To Make Man Whole."
