Alumni Student Convention

More than 1,500 people joined the School of Dentistry to attend the 41st Annual Alumni Student Convention February 8 to 12.

Nearly 300 people attended “Tongue Fu!,” a seminar about how to deal with difficult people. The event featured Sam Horn, president of Life Balance, Inc., whose clients include Hewlett-Packard, Fortune 500 Forum, Four Seasons Resorts, and others.

Those attending Thursday’s luncheon with Frank Pastore, who pitched for the Cincinnati Reds for seven years, learned about his struggle to understand Christianity and how to live an active faith. He spoke about God’s leading even when he did not understand or respect Christianity.

The annual Homecoming Banquet was held Thursday evening, and Pat Boone spoke about maintaining a Christian lifestyle in the entertainment industry. During the event Judson and Arlene Klooster were named Alumni of the Year.

On Friday, the annual Missionary Dentists & Prayer Breakfast featured Ken Pierson, DDS (SD’71), a returned missionary from Blantyre, Malawi, and Zimbabwe, and Dr. Pierson’s son, Kenneth, DDS (SD’00), who has served in Moscow, Russia, and Lilongwe, Malawi Africa. During the breakfast James Crawford, DDS, MPH, presented a plaque of appreciation from the General Conference, NASDAD, and the School to Florence Wetmore, administrative assistant, for her years of service.

On Friday, February 7, current research by students was presented as table clinics in Coleman Pavilion. (See photos on page 3).

In the evening, students and their families were invited to a dinner on the plaza. Nearly 1,000 people attended. Following the dinner Gerald Winslow, PhD, dean, Faculty of Religion, presided over the Student Dedication for the members of the dental classes of 2001 and 2004, and dental hygiene classes of 2001 and 2002. During the program freshmen were presented with a personalized, leather-bound Bible, and seniors received lab coats embroidered with their names. Dr. Winslow’s message was titled “Business or Profession?”Tours of the School were held Thursday and Friday afternoons. The tour provides valuable insight about the complexity of the school and clinics and how they work together.

On Sabbath at 4:00 p.m. Steve Darmody performed a Mission Benefit Concert. His music can be heard on inspirational Christian radio throughout the United States.
