Faculty development
Interschool Faculty Advisory Council by, Sylvia
Davis
The School of Dentistry is one of six Schools of Loma Linda
University. During the past decade, the LLU Board of Trustees endorsed
a structure called IFAC (Interschool Faculty Advisory Council) to be a
forum for University- wide faculty governance. Each school has two representatives,
elected by the faculty, to serve two-year terms. The purpose, as described
in the Faculty Handbook is to:
Create, maintain, and protect a University environment conducive
to the full and free development of scholarly learning, teaching, research
and patient care
Promote the spiritual growth of faculty, staff, and students within
a Seventh-day Adventist Christian context.
The functions of IFAC are to foster communication and enable the chancellor
and the faculty to discuss university-wide and interschool issues. The
responsibilities include:
Respond to requests from the chancellor
Provide a forum for faculty to be informed on university-wide issues
Propose faculty for task forces and University committees
Communicate with each Schools faculty governance bodies
Oversee the work of the faculty development committees in the schools
Plan and coordinate the annual faculty convocation
IFAC sponsors an Education Conference biennially, featuring innovative
LLU faculty teaching. During the day conference, a speaker of prominence
makes an address followed by a variety of activities including exhibits,
poster sessions, computer, and classroom demonstrations and displays.
Prizes, monetary and technical, are given for creative teaching methods
as displayed in various forums at the conference.
The most recent conference on January 24, 2002 focused on Integrating
Faith and Learning. Comments from dental faculty who attended the
conference include:
I learned that I am not alone in using particular computer programs.
Faculty from other schools taught me new tricks and will now be a resource
for me in the future.
One of my colleagues has been making national news with his high-tech
approach to teaching. He was asked to present his methods to a meeting
of deans. None of us who are his colleagues were aware until this conference
of his work.
I made new friends today, meeting fellow faculty members from other
Schools of the University.
All meetings are open for faculty members who would like to participate
in this forum. IFAC meets monthly at noon on the second Wednesday of each
month in the Magan Hall Conference Room. The coming meetings are: March
13, April 10, and May 8. The two representatives of the School of Dentistry
at the present time are Klaus Wolfram, SD71, MS73, associate
professor, periodontics, and Sylvia Davis, MA, director of admissions.
