Health Insurance Portability & Accountaility
Act
HIPAA is a broad law dealing with a variety of issues. One of the goals
is to make it easier for people to move from one health insurance plan
to another as they change jobs or become unemployed. This also means they
must be able to move their medical records and information easily to get
the care they need.
HIPAA is not just an information technology issueit is an operational
issue that will reach out and touch every area of the health-care organization.
Basic goals of HIPAA:
Improve the portability and continuity of health insurance coverage
Combat fraud abuse in health insurance and health-care delivery
Simplify the administration of health insurance
Reduce the administrative costs of health care
Encourage the development and use of electronic health information
technologies (transactions) and standardizing the format to be used throughout
the health-care industry.
HIPAA information will be featured in the Dentalgram on a monthly basis.
Watch this column for practice information
on complying with HIPAA regulations.
