Society of Scholars established
While Loma Linda has long been recognized for its clinical
accomplishments, many individuals do not realize the degree to which
faculty have also participated in scholarly activities.
Over the first 50 years, 54 dental faculty have written chapters in
many leading textbooks in a wide variety of disciplines. Twenty-six
faculty have authored or edited textbooks as a primary participant.
And recently with the incorporation of digital media, most faculty are
using a computer as part of their presentations. We also have 16 faculty
who have delivered course material via the intranet, distance education,
and in CD-ROM format.
To recognize these individuals, a Society of Scholars has been formed
to recognize those individuals with outstanding activity in the area
of publications. To be eligible for membership, an individual must
have completed 50 or more publications. During the commemorative celebration,
30 individuals were named charter members of the society and a number
of others will shortly achieve this distinction. The 30 charter members
have authored 3,035 publicationsan average of 101 per member.
Four members have published more than 200 articles: Philip Boyne,
DMD,
MS61, emeritus professor, oral and maxillofacial surgery; James
Kettering, professor, basic science faculty, School of Medicine; Dr.
Anthony Tjan, professor emeritus, restorative dentistry; and Mahmoud
Torabinejad, DMD, MSD, PhD, professor and director, advanced education
program in endodontics.
In addition, a new historical display on the first floor of Prince Hall
highlights these accomplishments. A copy of each textbook written by
dental school faculty during the first 50 years is on display.
