Ron Zane, SD’57, adjunct associate professor of service learning, was honored recently as Alumnus of the Year for La Sierra University.

At its annual alumni homecoming banquet, Dr. Zane received the accolades of his peers, classmates and administration and faculty of La Sierra University. Lawrence T. Geraty, PhD, La Sierra president, presented a lei and a crystal trophy to Dr. Zane.

Born in Kauai, Hawaii, Dr. Zane's circle of influence has spread far from those tropical shores to all corners of the globe. After graduating from La Sierra in 1952 with a bachelor’s degree in biology, he attended the School of Dentistry, receiving a DDS in 1957 in the historic first graduating class.

Following a two-year stint as captain in the U.S. Air Force, Dr. Zane began private dental practice in Norco, Calif., in 1959. He continues at the same site today.

Through his generosity, La Sierra-based humanitarian efforts in post-Communist Romania are improving conditions for the elderly, women prisoners, and orphans; Dr. Zane and his physician-spouse, Charlotte, have assisted with a church-building project there.

Numerous entities at La Sierra have benefited by his support, among them the Stahl Center for World Service, the John Hancock Center for Youth Ministry, and the World Museum of Natural History. In addition, Dr. Zane contributes to various scholarships and worthy student funds, ensuring an education for today’s students in whom he takes a personal interest.

Dr. Zane served for 25 years as associate professor of restorative dentistry at the School. He has given numerous table clinics at regional, state and national dental conventions, and holds two patents that impact dental procedures.

Dr. Zane conducts ongoing research in food and herbal medicines and has been awarded seven patents, among them an automatic conveying device, a method for grinding and cooking whole grain, and an altitude deviation-indicating device.

While Dr. Zane was president of the La Sierra Alumni Association from 1979-80, he instituted the President’s Award. He and Charlotte are the parents of three children.
