Brian Hanratty, Eunice Hong, and Jack Kavanagh, were among nine fourth-year dental students from three Southern California dental schools to receive grants from the Dental Foundation of California. The students were chosen by Loma Linda University, University of California Los Angeles, and University of Southern California based on their performance in student leadership, student government activities, community service activities, and academic and clinical performance.

The other students to receive grants were: UCLA: Mark Truman, Eric Phelps, and David Fife; and USC: Thomas Lammot, Adrian Silberman, and Tuan Duc Pham.

The Dental Foundation of California was formed in the late 1960s by five Los Angeles-based component dental societies of the California and American Dental Associations: Harbor, Los Angeles, San Fernando Valley, San Gabriel Valley and Western Los Angeles.

In the mid-1960s the dental societies had a “post payment” program which allowed patients to pay for services on a time payment plan. In order to provide for that program, dentists had a two percent withhold from their fees. When the program was eliminated, remaining monies were used to fund the Foundation. The Foundation was created to provide scholarships to students and to promote their involvement in organized dentistry.

Dental Foundation of California has since expanded its funding to charitable organizations identified within each component dental society boundary.

Grants have been given to several agencies such as the Los Angeles Free Clinic, the Greene-LeBaron Dental Clinic for AIDS patients, MEND (Meet Each Need with Dignity), and the San Gabriel Valley Dental Society Foundation providing care to needy children in the community.

Representatives from the five dental societies serve as the Board of Directors for the Dental Foundation of California and administer the activities and funds of the organization.
